Does Your Dog Share Your Love of Art?

Does Your Dog Share Your Love of Art?

Humans have a variety of tastes when it comes to the art that graces the walls of their homes and favorite museums. Some people love abstracts, some love oil paintings, some love modern art, and some love art deco. But, do the dogs you love have an understanding and appreciation of art and other beautiful things? Many people erroneously assume that because dogs see the world differently than we do, they can’t recognize or appreciate works of art.

While it’s true that dogs see the world in two dimensions and we see it in three, that doesn’t automatically exclude them from finding beauty in a variety of art forms. Similarly, while dogs do not possess the full color spectrum like people do, they do see, recognize, and understand colors like, yellows, blues, and a wide range of shades of gray. Additionally, dogs have much better peripheral vision than we do. How does all that affect the way they see art?

Dogs have been shown to react positively to photos and images of their owners. That, alone, indicates their ability to cognitively process images and react to them, so keep an open mind when it comes to exposing your favorite pooch to the world of art. Think of it this way – you probably enjoy watching your favorite television show on a wide screen, high-definition, full color TV screen. Your dog sees the exact same show on a curved screen (because of his enhanced peripheral vision) and with slightly fewer colors. Even though he might not see all the colors accurately, he still sees all the images and action.

Just like people appreciate different artworks and art forms, your dog appreciates beauty and art in slightly different ways than you. Dogs are intelligent animals. They have the ability to learn their name, respond to commands, and look totally innocent after tearing up your favorite shoes or sneaking food off your countertops. They can, in fact, see art and images, and appreciate them from their own point of view.

Tips For Trick or Treating With Pets

Tips For Trick or Treating With Pets

If you think trick or treating with your kids is fun, wait till you trick or treat with your dog. It’s a unique, fun experience you and your pet will enjoy. Start out by getting your dog in the spirit of Halloween with his own adorable dog costume or hat. Choose from a variety of costumes and hats in all sizes like our Panda Hat or Bat Hat. Both hats are stylish, comfortable, and sure to get admiring looks along your trick or treat route.

Want a costume versus a hat? Our Dragon Sweater features scales all the way down the back and eyes on the hoodie and is so cute, you won’t be able to stop admiring your pet. Our reversible Lady Bug/Bumblebee costume does double duty by providing two costume options in one affordable dog garment. You can check out our entire Halloween collection right here.

As much fun as it is to take your pet along, it’s also important to keep your dog and all the other trick or treaters safe. These tips will help you do exactly that:

  • If you’ll be out for a long time, bring along a few doggie treats and water. Dogs – especially puppies – have short attention spans, so be prepared to take him home if he gets bored, overtired, or overanxious.

  • Don’t let your dog eat chocolate or sugar-laden treats. Instead, bring a few of their normal treats along and remind your kids not to let the dog eat their candy.

  • The rush of children in festival costumes might be too much stimulation for your pet. Keep your dog on a short leash because he may be wary of, or frightened by, unfamiliar children and well-meaning adults who might want to pet him.

  • Not all kids have a pet in their home and your dog may unintentionally scare them. A short leash will solve the problem and you may want to hang back from house doors until they’re almost clear.

Our costumes will help your dog look great, and these tips will keep your dog safe and make sure the whole family has a great Halloween.
